Founded in 1973, CSAM is a medical specialty society comprised of practicing physicians dedicated to improving the care of persons with addictions. It is the largest organization of addiction medicine physicians in California. We provide high quality, meaningful and much needed educational opportunities and tools for physicians providing health care to patients suffering from alcohol, nicotine and other drug dependencies. According to the American Medical Association, addictive diseases are the number one preventable cause of illness and mortality in the United States. However, resources, tools and training for physicians to appropriately manage addiction lags sorely behind the need.

The Society sponsors an annual four-day conference, alternately a Review Course or a State of the Art Course. These conferences draw a national audience and provide a podium for nationally recognized researchers, clinicians, and leaders from national institutes such as NIDA, NIAAA, and CSAT. The Society provides scholarships for medical students and physicians-in-training to attend our conferences and organizes activities for these young physicians to interact with senior leaders in the field. In addition to its educational activities, the Society has an active public policy committee that contributes to public discourse on matters of public or legislative interest.

The Society publishes a quarterly newsletter and an annual directory of members. The CSAM website (www.csam-asam.org) provides easy access for physician referrals and is a resource for pertinent, up-to-date information.

Support from your organization will provide CSAM with the resources required to achieve our goals. Your support would help provide: 1) high-caliber faculty to educational conferences; 2) scholarships and educational grants for physicians in training; 3) conferences and workshops designed to disseminate clinically important tools for physicians to diagnose and appropriately treat patients with substance use problems; 4) communications activities (guidebooks, white papers, clinical synopses, etc.) designed to expand the experience of practicing physicians; 5) increased exposure for physicians to pertinent scientific advances and relevant products and services.

This is also an excellent way for our members to increase their educational exposure to relevant products and services. We are a 501(c)(3) tax-deductable charitable organization. Our Federal ID # is: 23-7364605.
