WELCOME!

Colleagues and friends, please join us by the harbor in beautiful Newport Beach, California for this year's California Society of Addiction Medicine Review Course. Ocean breezes and warm evenings are the setting for this thorough review and rediscovery of the core concepts of addiction medicine.

This year, our keynote speaker, Charles O'Brien, MD, PhD, will provide us with future applications of genomic medicine to the field of addiction. We will also hear from some of the top names in the field including H. Westley Clark, MD, JD, MPH, director of CSAT on the misuse and abuse of prescription drugs; George Koob, PhD, on the neurobiology of addiction; Richard Rawson, PhD, on treatment modalities; Karen Miotto, MD, on club drugs and M. Lynn Yonekura, MD, on substance abuse during pregnancy and the neonatal period.

Back by popular demand will be the Certification Exam Preparation Track for conference participants who would like more emphasis on test-taking tips, enriched study materials, practice questions, and guidance on how to make the most of valuable study time.

Our pre-conference workshops will offer a more in-depth look at such pertinent clinical topics as pain and addiction, a practical clinical-update for methadone providers, and a workshop for doctors and hospital well-being committees on how to approach impaired physicians in California's rapidly-changing regulatory environment.

In order to improve access to care, we will also offer a post-conference workshop on Saturday afternoon designed to help clinicians and their medical office staff to maximize reimbursement for substance abuse services.

For those interested in public policy, grab a lunch-to-go and come to Thursday's open lunch with H. Westley Clark, MD, JD, MPH. CSAM's Executive Council will be there and the dialogue is sure to be electrifying.

For evening fun Thursday, we will welcome back Don Catlin, MD, Olympic performance enhancing drug-sleuth extraordinaire, to share with us his perspectives on the Beijing Olympics at a free dessert reception. On Friday night, conference attendees will have a chance to relax with a fun-filled pool-side BBQ dinner (included with 3-day registration and Friday-only one-day registration).

Whether you're studying for the ASAM certification/recertification exam, seeking a solid clinical review, or simply deepening your understanding of chemical dependency and treatment, we invite you to come with us to Newport Beach. Come for the science, find fun and fellowship along the way.
